Episode 4: Come Together

Hey guys, sorry it’s taken a couple of extra days to post this. As we speak, episode 4 aired Monday, Episode 5 airs next Monday and we are in the middle of shooting 2nd unit on episodes 9 (which I’m directing) main unit of episode 10 – A HUGE new scene we’re adding to episode 7 and Episode 11 starts on Tuesday.

It’s been hectic… but great.

It’s such an amazing feeling to be working on something that you fully believe in, and have it be rewarded by having the fans dig it too. Believe me, myself and everyone else on the show appreciate that you guys are watching and enjoying what we’re up too. It makes all the hard work worth it.

And it has been hard… A show like HEROES, as you hopefully can tell, is a big complicated undertaking… That combined with the fact that the math of the air dates starts to catch up with you means that it gets a little crazy right about now. Think about it, it takes us (an average) of nine or ten shooting days to film every episode. But those are working days, Monday through Friday… So it takes 12 to 14 calendar days to make an episode. But, once we air, there’s a new episode on the air every 7 days…

We started filming in July and everything felt quite leisurely. By the time an episode finishes filming there will only be 5 weeks until it airs. That’s not a lot of time to edit it, do music, sound effects, visual effects and color correction.

So, we’ve been picking up time by filming weekends. I’m doing a couple of 7-day weeks in a row, and so are many others… It’s cool, but you get fried.

Anyway, episode 4 which just aired – How cool is the last 5 minutes??/ “Save the Cheerleader, Save the World.” We made up crew shirts with that saying right away.

It was directed by Ernest Dickerson: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0225416/ He is a great guy who the cast really liked.

Here’s a few photos that I thought you’d like:

Next week I’ll have more… I promise.

Thanks for the pictures those are fantastic! I love Hayden's expressions.

Know that we all appreciate your 7 day weeks. Hopefully, you will get a short haitus around Christmas. Not too long, we are ever impatient for more!

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with us. Makes us feel that much closer to the show!
Wow, does Hayden's latex autopsy body ever look fake in the garish light of a cheap camera flash. It looked fantastic on TV though.

Loved the last few seconds of this ep with Hiro looking not at all like the adorable cherubic sci-fi geek I've come to know and love. So serious and morose in the future. I look forward to seeing the change in his personality as the season progresses.

Please know that you and the rest of the cast and crew are loved and appreciated for all your hard work, Gary. You guys have a real winner on your hands and I'm thrilled that you got renewed.

i appreciate your staying connected with the viewers, especially because as complicated a logistic problem for shooting it is for you, think about allt he questions we as the audience need and want answered.

what makes this so exciting is the fact that there are so many threads, the character stories to dive into, as well as the plot lines to follow. where do you focues, and how can you keep uo, yet it's that level of rishness and your attention to detail that makes this something that i beleive will rank up there with one of the great series of all time.

the writing, acting, execution and frankly, the storyline of good vs evil, hope vs despair, where the "heroes" are normal people with normal problems, and certainly flaws (adulterer, stripper, heroin addict, cheerleader, hello!) this is an epic, and a tremendous one as well.

all i can say is thank you for your much appreciated hard work, it shows in what you've created, and I'd hate to be Continuity on this one.

As the review check said, all the hard work is very much appreciated! The show is awesome. I've really enjoyed reading the blogs and seeing how the episodes come together. It does truly make the fans aware of how much goes into the show. Thanks!!

It's great that you're around to keep us posted on what's going on without really giving too much away. Hayden's expressions on the autopsy table were so classic! I'm enjoying this show so much, and I look forward more and more with each passing week!

Greg - Once upon a time I was a young man in Los Angeles with one foot in the music biz (IRS Records) and another in show biz (Walt Disney Co.) and I know what the pressure of a production schedule can do to people. The carpenters, the designers, the gaffers, the writers, the caterers, the production assistants, the continuity masters, the list is endless.

Here's what I want to say: There are a lot of us sci-fi/fantasy fans out here and, the sad truth is, Hollywood (TV Division and Movie Division) traditionally has not done the genre very well.

There is a constant temptation to allow it to degenerate into either camp or pulp, because I think the people in charge don't really understand what makes the genre special.

So far, with Heroes, you guys aren't doing that or allowing that sad tradition to take hold. (Exception: you broke the fourth wall with that Rain Man shot...okay, it was cute but breaking the fourth wall is, in my experience, fatal to sci-fi/fantasy).

That being so, you have a chance to be the man behind the chair of a show that is genre-defining, if it holds to taking its story serious on its own terms.

Congrats on your success to date and best of luck to you.

I've read a number of posts that compare Lost to Heroes...but I never get the sense that the Heroes writers are making it up as they go along, as I do with Lost (and especially 24 ). Everything seems to be following a master storyline...let's hope the "14 day" weeks, don't mean any scrimping on story!

NewSisyphus - I agree, the ain man shot was Campy, and there was no need for it. Plus they are Japanese, I thought the Clothes would of been more traditional.

The show has, thus far, been brilliant. I have been a fan of yours since your Smallville days, and I'm glad you brought your magic from that show to Heroes.

Thank you for blogging about production. It really gives us fans better insight on the episodes we are watching. I look forward to reading more of your entries, as well as watching future episodes of the show.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the pictures and even the blog itself. I know that for fans of the show it is a great opportunity to get those sneak peeks into the director's mind.

No doubt you are probably going to start to see a lot of traffic after today's usatoday blog mentioning this site. :)
